This letter, signed by members of the SSH research community from across the EU and beyond is a follow-up to the exchanges with the European Commission on the future of the Social Sciences and Humanities by the Inter-agency Task Group on SSH (ITG), composed of ALLEA, ECHIC, ESF (SCH/SCSS), Net4Society and SSH ERA-Nets.
Next steps: European Alliance
With a more long term perspective, the ITG has also responded to calls from the SSH community to establish a "European Alliance for the Social Sciences and Humanities". A first, very small brainstorming meeting was hosted by EERA in Berlin. A second and substantially more inclusive gathering is to be convened after the exchanges with the Commissioner for Research and Innovation on 11 November 2011. The intention is to bring together European umbrella organisations (as in the ITG) and their national members, European-level subject associations, and national and transnational networks of research institutions in the broad areas of SSH. The Alliance would offer itself as a single contact point for policymakers, societal and scientific stakeholders in Europe and beyond, who wish to access SSH expertise in different disciplinary and institutional settings from across the continent.
